In New Zealand, we are blessed to have many Emergency Service teams available to us, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And one thing most of us don't realise is that many of these people are volunteers and in New Zealand, most volunteers are unpaid. They often work a 'normal' paid job, respond when there is an emergency and do it with pride to serve their community. For some, they are paid Policemen, Firefighters or Ambulance Paramedics and when they finish for the day, they put their volunteer hats on.
